Which violin strings are best for my violin?

There is no definite answer for this question because each violin is different and reacts differently to different types of strings. It also depends on the type of music you play, for example a classical violinist’s strings will not sound right to a blue grass fiddler. Also there are three different types of strings.

Synthetic core these are the most popular because they are the most stable, Gut strings because they have the best tone but must be tuned more often and steel strings but these are generally for specialized uses

Gut Strings

Gut strings have a warm rich sound with many complex overtones, they take longer to stretch than synthetics but once stretched are generally stable. Smaller gauge gut strings will have less carrying power and will be brighter. Thicker gauge gut strings will be more powerful and gritty. Gut strings are usually preferred for classical and Baroque music.

Steel Core Strings

Over the years steel strings have become more popular than gut among non-classical players. They have a direct clear sound and very few overtones. They stay in pitch more easily and last far longer. Steel strings have a bright thin sound and are good for beginner instruments.

Synthetic Core Strings

These strings were first invented in the late seventies and are made from high tech nylons and composite materials; they have the warm sound qualities of gut but are more stable.

Violin string gauges

Violin strings come in a wide variety of thicknesses and tensions; with a thick string you will get more volume middle frequencies. With a thin string you will get a brighter higher tone with less sustain and power.

Violin shops will sell you any brand of string you want and some will even change your violin strings. The only problem is that there is usually a vast mark up on these strings sometimes as much as a 100%. The cheapest way to buy strings is to order them from the internet. A quick Google search will find you dozens of shops where you can cheaply buy strings
